The majority of the haitian population lives in extreme poverty, so therefore education, arts and culture are not accessible and considered as NON-PRIORITY. EXADANS (ESPACE XARAGUA POUR LA DANSE) established in Jacmel (Haiti), is a community dance based project who’s mission statement is to provide dance classes to children for both recreationnal and professionnal purposes. The school director Jean-Aurel Maurice is an international professionnal dancer-choreographer and ballet instructor (french state diploma), he strongly believes that by providing quality dance training children can become future professionnals and prepared to fight against poverty. Jean-Aurel Maurice came from Carrefour (Poor neighborhood of Port au Prince) as a child he overcomed many social, economical and racial barriers studied with world known dance schools (DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM) and he performed on the most prestigious stages of the world such as THE PARIS OPERA GARNIER. His entire dance studies were funded by scholarships programs that no longer exist nowadays. Today, he establishes EXADANS IN JACMEL (SOUTH EAST of HAITI) with the objective to pass on the knowledge of dance to younger generations. We need volunteer dance teachers and choreographers, we need office supplies (Computers, Printers, papers), dance equipments such as floors, Gymnastic mat/floor, dance clothes and shoes, books, dvds, stage lights and sound system.
